Costume Design for Revolutionary Theatre-Pt. 2

Another incredible story created by playwright Lavinia Robers, Finding Mothers takes viewers on a journey from the eyes of a 7 year old girl who is grieving. As activists, we cannot begin to address the complexities of our community's problems without addressing the individual hardships that humble us, challenge us, and make us, often painfully so, human.

The story is one of a young girl named Paloma who's hardworking mother, a nurse, herself dies of cancer. Her entire family- Paloma, sister, and father- have found their own ways to grieve. But Paloma's requires one of complexity, invisible friends, nightmares, and emotional manifestations.

Costuming this play, similar to Eaten Voices, proved to be a challenge that was both emotionally and artistically rewarding. Through each costumed piece, created from clothing donations and scraps collected from the cast and crew, I was able to combine costume inspirations of similar theatrical narrative, the Fall, with the specific creative needs of the playwright and director/sound engineer, Michael Feld.

This play is not one to miss. It opens this evening at the Manhattan Repertory Theater on 42nd Street at 8th and will have two more runs on Friday October 26th at 9pm and Sunday October 28 at 8:30pm.

A conversation and artistic response to cancer should not be limited to biology or fundraising but rather the web of relationships, emotions, and humanity connected by the loss of a loved one.

Costume Design for Revolutionary Theatre

Garments have the power to communicate, to connect, to empathize and to empower. ReciclaGEM has joined forces with playwright Lavinia Roberts, director Lily Raabe, and a cast of talented actors, dancers, mask makers with a classically produced music score to tell the story of a young girl who, surviving sexual assault, retreats into her subconscious, an artesenal world of night creatures and darkness.

Created from fabric scraps and clothing donations, we at ReciclaGEM join this brave young woman and the night creatures of her mind into the swampy bog. Come join us this evening, Wednesday evening, and Saturday evening for the Thespis Theatre Festival hosted by the Cabrini Repertory Theater in Washington Heights, NY on this journey into subconscious.

Project Broadway Costumes Week 1: Success!

For this first week, before the official start of MYOwn Image, we were given the challenge of rummaging through a costume closet filled with old Rocky Horror costumes and XXL polka dot dresses from the 80s and creating costumes with nothing but a set of safety pins for 18 fabulous young actors of Playhouse on the Green's program, Project Broadway, for which MYOwn Image will be designing and producing costumes.




Each Project Broadway production is created and conceived by the young actors themselves (ranging K-8th grade), under the guidance of rotating teaching artist professionals. For this first week, the actors of Project Runway created a Bridgeport ode to the Emerald City (i.e. "New York") under the title of Broadway to Broadway.
